About the Position:


Perform Transmission Planning engineering studies and related functions within the US Business Development group responsible for evaluating and developing electric transmission solutions with associated or complementary transmission services, as necessary. Initial focus is expected within and across various US regional transmission areas of PJM, MISO, ISO-NE and NYISO, as necessary. Close coordination and use of support resources with National Grids transmission planning department is essential to ensure optimal use of existing capabilities, practices, systems and tools, with opportunities to help augment.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Conduct analytical studies for transmission system expansion, interconnection of new generation, and load to the transmission system. These analytical studies should consider power system thermal, voltage, and reactive behavior, as well as transient, dynamic, harmonic, and short circuit performance as they relate to system reliability, economics, and operating flexibility.

  • Perform thermal capability analysis (ratings) for transmission lines, power transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and surge arresters.

  • Perform transfer limit analysis for transmission network interface.

  • Perform all computer modeling necessary to conduct power flow and stability studies for Transmission Planning and Analysis in support of Business Development opportunities and evaluation.

  • Partner with transmission planning group and other internal engineering functions; utilize a team approach to ensure consistent and thorough analysis in transmission planning studies and analysis.

  • Incorporate innovative thinking into the development of comprehensive solutions.

  • Document study findings in reports and prepare and defend recommendations in presentations to executives responsible for funding decisions.

  • Prepare and/or be a key contributor in developing project proposals.

  • Prepare and/or be a key contributor in presenting project proposals, study findings and recommendations to the Independent System Operators(ISOs).

  • Provide support of analysis for siting, permitting and licensing requirements and/or hearings.

  • Represent National Grid interests on national, regional, and local levels in various transmission planning and operations committees, task forces and working groups.

  • When necessary, manage engineering consultants work required to augment or complement various aspects of the Business Development projects.

  • Work in a project team environment interacting with individuals with various technical specialties and industry experience.

  • Fulfill a lead technical role to help ensure we are pursuing the best potential projects in a very timely manner.

  • Resolve technical issues that may arise in different phases of a project development.


Qualifications

Knowledge & Experience Required:




  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited engineering school

  • Experience or thorough knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques in power flow, short circuit and transient stability analyses. PSS/E, MUST, ASPEN and/or PowerGemTARA experience.

  • Proficiency in office and mobile software applications.

  • Excellent work ethics with customer focus, flexibility, teamwork and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and through written documents.

  • Ability to prioritize work and participate as a team member on multiple projects at one time.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with a competitive mindset and a winning envisioned with FERC Order 1000

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record

  • Demonstrate a high level of personal initiative an ability to interact with company personnel, external engineering firms, regulatory representatives, town/city officials, and ISO/NPCC/NERC representatives in a positive, team building manner.

  • Familiarity with ANSI standards, NESC, and IEEE standards.

  • Valid Driver's license and acceptable driving record


Knowledge & Experience Highly Preferred:



  • Transmission planning standards and criteria of NERC and one or more Regional Entities pertaining to NPCC, RFC and/or MRO.

  • Participation within one of the following RTO/ISO Regions: ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM or MISO planning processes, procedures and working groups.

  • Knowledge of power systems:Protection system operation and reliability philosophy,Utility system practices, Three-phase power system theory/operation both static and dynamic, Short circuit theory/application, Motor generation theory/application, Reactive compensation theory,Substation configuration/construction/maintenance techniques, Transmission line configurations/design/maintenance techniques, Outage planning, and Congestion philosophy and analysis.
